Blackfeet Photo
Circa 1921

Fantastic hand-colored photograph of a Blackfoot family moving camp. The photograph is signed in the lower left "A. Nichol, 1921", but it is thought that the signature is that of the colorist. The photographer was probably Henry Pollard, and the photograph probably was taken around 1900, possibly in Northern Montana or in Canada. In large format, the composition consists of a man and woman on horseback, with the woman in the foreground in her beaded dress. She has a travois on her horse, which is a paint horse. A little girl peeks from behind the mother's horse. As if that's not enough, a foal is trailing its mother, and a dog also completes the family. The horse gear that is visible is simply amazing - the man's mount has a red stroud, beaded bridle and large red stroud beaded martingale. The woman's mount has a large red stroud breastcollar and there are saddle bags with matching red stroud and beadwork on her horse. A beaded crupper is behind her saddle. A herd of horses grazes in the background. This is one of the nicest photographs we've had in our history. Image is 15" x 19", attractively framed in 29" x 33" frame.

The Horse Fighter
Circa 1906

Dramatic, hand-colored photograph; original negative by L.A. Huffman. This copy was probably produced by
Huffman and colored by his daughter (NOT Coffrin). This is one in a series that Huffman captured of bronc breaking--an amazing sequence of photographs considering the equipment he was using. It appeared as one of the images in a Scribner's Magazine article written by Huffman in July, 1907, entitled "The Last Busting at the Bow-Gun." A photocopy of the original article goes with the photograph. Huffman's daughter frequently assisted him with coloring the photographs. Framed in a conservation setting with UV glass.
Size: Approx. 11" H x 13 3/4" W.

Ken Maynard
circa
1937

Striking large hand painted photograph of Ken Maynard, circa 1937. Ken Maynard was a showman who was involved with the circus and later became one of, if not the first, singing cowboy in film. Developing a photograph this large was diffcult to do during the time, which makes this particular photograph quite unusual. The photo was taken by Sahli in Appleton, Wisconsin. In this photo Ken sits posed, astride a Bohlin crafted saddle, wearing what looks to be an N. Turk outfit. Framed: 35 3/4" in height, 28" in width. Image size: 31 1/2" height, 23 1/2" width.

Cheyenne Gunmen
Circa 1884

Albumen photograph, mounted on board, of eight armed men (some look like youths), signed "Kirkland, 1884, Cheyenne, Wyo". The photograph is quite large, and has some scuffing and dirt, yet the image is extremely clear. It is believed that these men were participants in the Johnson County War. None are, as yet, identified, however, the man sitting in front appears in another photograph of Cattle Barons getting ready for a horse race (in the University of Wyoming archives, and on page 209 of the Time Life book "The Gunfighters"). Board and photo are approx. 16.5 x 12.5, in a larger conservation frame. This could be a very important photograph. Kirkland took many photographs during the Johnson County War, including one in 1892 of the stockmen and their hired guns upon their arrest.
