Susie Meldrum Collection-National Parks

This unique collection of Yellowstone Park items came from Susie Meldrum of Denver, Colorado. Susie was the niece of John W. Meldrum, United States Commissioner for Yellowstone National Park from 1894 to 1935. Meldrum was affectionately known as "The Grand Old Man of Yellowstone National Park." Her uncle collected several YNP related items throughout his years as U.S. Commissioner. One of the items below, "Annals of Wyoming" discuss John Meldrum's life before and after his service with Yellowstone Park. Also included is an intriguing hand-colored photo of the Grand Canyon, possibly pre-1900.

Circa 1899


Fascinating journey on the Northern Pacific Rail Road, from Minnesota to Washington. Delivered to Susie Meldrum in it's original envelope. The booklet is in excellent condition. Size: 9" x 7". It also features hundreds of photos that accompany each leg of the adventure. Highly detailed.

Haynes Postcard Set
Circa 1910

Incredible boxed set of 50 postcards of Yellowstone, printed in Germany which was known for its high quality standards. All images are by the Haynes Company. Cards are enclosed in their original box. Some postcard images are rare. The package also includes a sample card with advertising text. Postcard size: 3 1/2" x 5 1/2".

Large Glass Paperweight

Circa 1900

We believe this paperweight to be a pre-1900 item. All glass, with a hand-colored photograph of a geyser inserted inside. Pressed into the bottom of the weight is "Yellowstone Park Haynes Photo." This is fairly large and considerably heavy with a 13" circumference, 4" diameter.

Circa 1920

The words "Yellowstone Park" are written down the stem, with a cutout of deer at the top of this sweet teaspoon. Sterling silver (marked).

Where Gush the Geysers

Circa 1899

Intriguing National Yellowstone Park brochure detailing all the ins and outs of visiting the park. Maps, geysers timelines, fishing spots, and other handy information along with colored and B/W photos throughout the park. This brochure was produced by the Oregon Short Line Railroad in 1899. A rare collectible, in excellent condition."

National Hotel Photograph

Circa 1890

A rare photograph taken of the National Hotel during it's completion in 1890. The hotel was modified in 1911 and was renamed as the Mammoth Hotel. In 1936 it was demolished and replaced by a newer hotel, but keeping the Mammoth name. Image size: 6 1/2" x 8 1/2". The board has some spotting. The image is in good shape with a minor discoloration on the right side of the image. Photographer is not known.

Canyon Hotel Architectural Rendering

Circa 1910

Black and white photograph of an original architectural rendering of the Canyon Hotel by Robert Reamer. The drawing is signed and dated in the negative. The boards edges are a bit creasd and torn, including through the image in lower left hand area. Still, very rare and collectible YNP park memorabilia. Image size: 9 1/2" x 12 3/4".

Yellowstone in Jingletone

Circa 1921

A delightful booklet of poems using lots of the vernacular of the day. Poems focus on life within Yellowstone Park. Written by Clarence A. Brewer in 1921 and published by the J.E. Haynes Company, St. Paul, MN. Each page includes black and white photos of geological formations and wildlife. The frontispiece has a color photo of a mother bear and her two cubs. An unusual find. Booklet is 9" x 6".

Annals of Wyoming

Circa 1941

This two volume set was published by the Wyoming Historical Department in 1941. Both volumes discuss the role John Meldrum played as YNP's U.S. Commissioner. Other chapters discuss various historical information about the state of Wyoming and Yellowstone. Fascinating read. Book size: 9" x 6".

J.E. Haynes Christmas Card

Circa 1937

J.E. Haynes was the son of Yellowstone Park photographer F. Jay Haynes. This was Jack Haynes' family Christmas card in 1937. A simple folder containing two cards with early images in a collage from his father's early days.

Grand Canyon Photograph

Circa 1900

An early, possibly pre-1900 hand-colored photograph of the famous Grand Canyon. Marked with a copyright by the Fred Harvey Company, and in a period frame. Harvey was an entrepreneur who developed the Harvey House lunch rooms, restaurants, souvenir shops, and hotels. He developed the El Tovar Hotel at the Grand Canyon and ran all the concessions within the park. Harvey is also known for pioneering the art of commercial cultural tourism. Image size: 10" x 8". With frame: 11" x 9 1/4".
