Peyote Bird Pendant/Pin

Circa 1940

The peyote bird is symbolic of the Native American Church movement. Most pieces found with this image were made for Native wear rather than for tourists, and they continue to be made today. The bird may derive from the early Ghost Dance bird which the Arapaho, Ute, Kiowa and Cheyenne used quite frequently. This piece has both a pinback, and a delicate shepherd's crook at top, allowing it to be worn on a chain. Shown here on a Jack Walker leather lanyard. Possibly Kiowa or Navajo, hand cut.
