John Hampton Oil Painting

By John Hampton

(b.1918, d.1999)

Circa 1958

Born in New York City and then settling in Scottsdale, Arizona, John (Johnny) Hampton became a renowned painter and sculptor of cowboy life that he grew to know first hand from living much of his life in the Southwest.
He was raised in Brooklyn and developed a love for the West from seeing Tom Mix movies. Acting out his fantasy of becoming a cowboy, he used pretended he was roping cows by using his mother's clothesline. He began illustration pulp magazines with western themes while he was in high school and at age sixteen, won a contest for sketch artists. When World War II began, he served in an Intelligence capacity in the South Pacific. Having assisted Fred Harman with the comic strip "Red Ryder," he used the proceeds after the War to buy a small ranch near Silver City, New Mexico, in order to get a taste of the cowboy life that so intrigued him. He stayed there for twelve years before moving to Arizona where he lived in Prescott, Cave Creek, Scottsdale, Phoenix and finally in Sonoita, where he was living at the time of his death. Image is 25.75" by 21.75" actual 16" by 20", signed and dated.

Teton Range Painting

By Conrad Schwiering

(b.1916, d.1986)

Circa 1950

Conrad Schwiering's Oil of the Teton Mountain range, circa 1950. Working from his home and studio in Jackson, Wyoming, Conrad Schwiering painted mountain landscapes that showed the changing seasons. He is known for his views of the Teton Mountains and said: "I plan on going out every day to sketch these mountains no matter what sort of weather is brewing. Because this is really what a mountain painter does--he catches, if he can, the essence of the moods, as they come across the mountains, hoping he can pass them on to others."
When asked how long it takes to do a picture, Schwiering replied: "Oh, I'd say about two weeks and 35 years."
He was a member of the National Academy of Western Art. His father was Dean of Education at the University of Wyoming, where Schwiering took a minor in arts. He also studied under Robert A. Grahame and Raphael Lillywhite of Denver, and then went to the Art Students League to study with Charles S. Chapmen, the painter he most admired. Framed 30.25" by 22" actual 23.5" by 15.5".

Yellowstone Old Faithful Oil Painting

By J.E. Stuart

Circa 1940

Born in Bangor, Maine, James Everett Stuart became known for his panoramic landscapes from Maine to California to Alaska to the Panama Canal, but especially of the American West with focus on Northern California and Oregon.Stuart's parents took him to California at the age of eight, and the family settled in San Francisco where he attended the public schools and studied art with Virgil Williams, Raymond Yelland, Thomas Hill, and William Keith at the San Francisco School of Design. His early work was dramatic California landscape including the Sacramento and San Joaquin rivers, and in style the works were moody and mysterious and suggestive of the French Barbizon School. He first traveled to the Northwest in 1876, and in 1881, he opened his studio in Portland, Oregon and from there traveled throughout the West and East Coast and into Mexico. Subjects included Yosemite as well as California missions and adobes. He painted landscapes whose sales ultimately were financially remunerative and which established his reputation.
in 1885, he first went to Yellowstone where he camped for several weeks, supplied himself with fish for food, climbed steep cliffs including Electric Peak, and filled his sketchbook for studio paintings. The following summer, Stuart returned, having negotiated a free pass from the Northern Pacific Railroad in exchange for paintings. At the end of the summer, he went East to New York City on the return part of his train pass. Settling a studio in New York for four years, he continued to arrange several more summer railroad passes to Yellowstone. He was unable to arrange a formal arrangement for painting sales from the Park's gift shop, so he sold paintings from his tent.
Of those years, he expressed that he much preferred being in the park to studio painting, but he stopped visiting in 1889 and instead traveled to Alaska and the Coastal Range. Old Faithful oil by J.E. Stuart Ca: 1887. Signed and dated. Image of Old Faithful with Castle geyser and Devils Well in foreground. 20.5" by 18.5 Framed, 10" by 12" actual.

Prairie Rose Candlesticks
by Susan Adams

The clean lines of Art Deco design combined with the simplicity and honesty of Spanish Colonial silver work are the inspirations for Susan's candlesticks. These sterling silver candlesticks were completely fabricated by hand. The bases were raised from silver disks and the vertical elements were formed and hard silver soldered. The beads at the base and caps of the vertical elements were dapped and hard soldered. Each candlestick has 4 solid sterling, hand-carved and cast pieces. The castings are one of a kind and are comprised of 49 individually carved flowers on each candlestick. Each candlestick comprises 21 separate pieces, which were cut and constructed with extreme precision so that the candlesticks would be a perfectly matched pair. All of these pieces were planished several times for a hammered finish.

The Prairie Rose candlesticks stand 14" tall, using 35 ounces of sterling silver.
