We
Honor Our Horses: Native American Horse Regalia 1870 - 1940
Sioux Horse Neck Cover
(ca. 1890)
The
horse, west of the Missisippi, meant everything to most Native
American groups. A safe mount, a mover of camps, a brave buffalo
hunter and warrior, and even sustenance when starvation was the
alternative - all this the horse gave Native people, and in return,
they honored their equine counterparts. Wealth was counted in
horses, marriages sealed by horses, horses were stolen from one's
enemy as one of the heaviest blows to ego and wealth. Societies
built around the honor of the horse became important for warriors.
And, once forced to live a life without buffalo, the horse was,
for some, the final and only remaining semblance of freedom.
Navajo Germantown Yarn
Saddle Throw (ca 1890)
For
over a decade Cayuse has found some of the outstanding examples
of horse gear, and items celebrating the horse. In honor of the
horse, and in anticipation of the exhibit "A Song for the
Horse Nation" at the National Museum of the American Indian,
we gather together rare, beautiful, humorous and poignant examples
of the horse in Native American cultures.
