Capturing the Essence

Regional Photographs 1850-1940

Sheep in Coulee

Collotype, L.A. Huffman circa 1890

Layton A. Huffman was one of the most candid photographers of the northern plains and as such, his work is now regarded as rich in historical context. Charlie Russell and other contemporaries actually copied many of his images in their paintings, since the west that Huffman captured had disappeared by the time the artists put the life on canvas. This is a large format collotype. A large group of sheep spills down a drainage, with a riderless horse trailing behind. This is a famous image of Huffman's. Original, created by Huffman. Photo circa 1890, Collotype circa 1910. 16 3/8" x 25 1/2" in larger mat. Can be shipped rolled without mat.

Price: $1,500.00

Lost Creek Ranch

Circa: 1930's

Fantastic, large vintage photograph of Lost Creek Ranch, an 1880's homestead-turned-dude ranch in Grand Teton National Park (Jackson Hole), and now known for its upscale hospitality. The photograph probably dates to the 1930's, but is unsigned. The image shows a lodge-style log building with a river-rock chimney, and several smaller cabins off to one side. The full magnificence of the Teton Range provide the backdrop, making it easy to understand the ranch's appeal to this day. The image is 19" x 14", in a larger conservation frame.

American Alps

Circa: 1930

The Teton Range in Jackson Hole was often compared to the European Alps and thus were dubbed the "Alps of America". Crandall was the only photographer who developed his photographs at half strength in order to have the color become a bolder part of his work. 27 1/4" x 35 1/4".

The Horse Fighter

Circa: 1906

Dramatic, hand-colored photograph; original negative by L.A. Huffman. This copy was probably produced by
Huffman and colored by his daughter (NOT Coffrin). This is one in a series that Huffman captured of bronc breaking--an amazing sequence of photographs considering the equipment he was using. It appeared as one of the images in a Scribner's Magazine article written by Huffman in July, 1907, entitled "The Last Busting at the Bow-Gun." A photocopy of the original article goes with the photograph. Huffman's daughter frequently assisted him with coloring the photographs. Framed in a conservation setting with UV glass.
