Cowboy Radio Lamp

These lamps were popular in the 1930's and 1940's when radio cabinets were large pieces of furniture, and it was sometimes necessary to have a little light thrown on the controls. The style eventually morphed into "TV Lamps" - something decorative to sit atop the large box when it wasn't on. This one is a fantastic Art Deco cowboy on bucking bronc, who is backlit by a bulb hiding behind a gorgeous piece of yellow slag glass. The cowboy is made of chalkware, with painted details. 17" high x 16" wide, x 7 1/2" deep.

Glacier Park Mountain Goat Woodcarving

John L. Clarke, Glacier Park (1881-1970)

Circa 1930

Clarke, who was part Blackfeet, was rendered deaf and mute by Scarlet Fever as a youngster. In school he was introduced to wood carving. As a young adult he lived in what would become East Glacier, Montana, as his notoriety grew. Presidents, artists, and industrialists collected his work and thought him among the best carvers the country had produced. The Great Northern's "Goat" logo was based on Clarke's carving. This small goat is an excellent example. 17" high x 16" wide, x 7 1/2" deep.

Glacier Packstring

Circa: 1920

"Glacier Pack String" bronze by Charlie Beil, ca 1920-30. This bronze originally resided in the famous Mint Saloon in Great Falls, Montana. Beil was a friend of Charlie Russell's. They met while Beil was a guide in Glacier Park. Presumably both also spent much time in the Mint. Beil followed Russell's empty saddle during the funeral procession, and carved the headstone for Russell's grave. He went on to Canada, where he was the official trophy sculptor for the Calgary Stampede for about 10 years. Aside from these rodeo trophies, Beil resisted making more than one copy of any of his pieces, so this is likely the only depiction of this scene extant.
