Tooled Saddle Pockets

Circa: 1930

Beautifully tooled saddle pockets, perhaps orginally part of a similarily tooled saddle. Possibly made by Snyder in Denver, however there is no mark. Under flap one can appreciate the original lustre of the leather. 33" long and 8" across each pocket. Nice overall patina.

Price: $850.00

Early Plains Quirt

Circa: 1870

Early cowboy or Native American quirt, made of an unborn elk or calf's leg. The top is leather wrapped, with a spiral underneath of (probably) another strip of leather to give the handle some grip. The lashes are laced onto the hoof of the animal, and old repairs show in this area. This could be a Native piece, or a cowboy's tool made from materials at hand. Very unusual. Circa 1870. 26" long, including wrist strap.

Price: $750.00

Ortega Hobbles

Wonderful rawhide show hobbles. Two separate 4-plait strands are laced together in the center, with braided knots and a center ring. From the collection of, and probably made for, Elisie Payne. Unmarked, but guaranteed by Cayuse to be Luis' work, and were purchased with other marked and matching pieces. Length: 13".

Price: $4,500.00

Ortega Reigns

Circa 1950

Ortega was simply the best in his trade, hands down. Incredible, multi-colored 16-plait, with 42 buttons on each rein, and 38 buttons on the romel. This piece is in exceptional condition. The popper is marked inside with Ortega's name, and "Elfie Payne" for whom they were made.

Price: $18,000.00

Giant Model Revolver

Circa 1930

Giant revolver with working parts and wooden grips. This must have been a store display or advertising piece. We're guessing it was made sometime in the 1930's. All the parts work (if one could only find a bullet large enough!). The cylinder turns, the hammer cocks and the trigger also works. Interestingly, the cylinder is made for 5 shells, not 6. This comes with a sad-looking giant holster of pressed leather. 25" long, and 12" from bottom of grip to top of hammer.

Price: $2,500.00

Black Parade Saddle

Circa 1950

Black tooled saddle with silver ornamentation, made by Harry Rowell circa 1950. Round skirts, with numerous round domed conchos on the skirts and fenders, and silver on the swells, horncap, cantle back, and front of seat. Also has mule ears on each stirrup with matching silver conchos. In excellent condition - rideable.

Price: $9,500.00

Visalia Saddle

Circa 1930

Beautiful Visalia full floral tooled saddle circa 1930, with ties to Death Valley Scotty. Walter Scott was a rancher, borax mule teamster, wild west show participant and con man, who fooled a wealthy patron into backing a fictitious gold mine in Death Valley. The patron, instead of suing Scotty, became his benefactor. When Scotty's rich friend started building a large home in Death Valley in 1924, Scotty was there to claim it as his "castle". It is still called Scotty's Castle and is one of the main attractions in Death Valley National Park. This Visalia saddle purportedly belonged to Death Valley Scotty, but more likely was just claimed by him as his own - it has a stamp on the back of the cantle reading "Death Valley Ranch", which is what Johnson, Scotty's benefactor, called his home. The saddle is in excellent condition. It has five of six sterling conchos still remaining, and has hardly seen use. The tooling pattern is evident in the Visalia saddle catalogs, and is distinctive in that each large flower is different from the one next to it. The stirrups may not be original to the saddle, but they are a nice match.

Alfonso's Quickdraw

Holster

Circa 1960

Vintage Alfonso's of Hollywood filigree quick draw gun rig, circa 1960. With the name Dolly Johnson stamped inside. Alfonso's is still in business today, but Alfonso Pineda passed away in 1995. Black "No. 3" full floral filigree leather, with gold calf underneath, and gold cartridge loops. This model was made so that the holster could be worn high on the belt or dropped low. The holster has two 1/2" sterling buckle sets, as well as a large sterling engraved garrison style main buckle with a unique two-tipped billet. Approx size 29".

Price: $3,500.00

Ken Boen Gun Rig

Circa 1950

Multi-colored gun belt and holster belonging to Ken Boen, rodeo clown and bullfighter in the Hall of Fame. It's hard to read, but on the back of the holster it looks like it says "Freddie Ryser Jr. to Ken Boen. Boen's name is tooled into the front of the holster. Red, yellow and green paint, probably for enhancing Boen's costume visibility, is used on both the belt and the holster. Looks like it fits a Colt Single Action. Used, and with much character. One-of-a-kind.

Price: $1,850.00

Visalia Parade Saddle
Circa 1940

Beautiful Visalia silver mounted saddle. Black, with subtle brown wear showing through. A custom piece, showing elements of several different styles offered by Visalia, this belonged to Bob Sartain, California/Oregon cowman (1890 - 1978). Sartain is an inductee in the National Cowboy Hall of Fame. The saddle, complete with large tapaderos, has silver conchos and corner plates bearing Visalia's distinctive horse's head profile. The matching bridle has conchos on the brow band and a drop from browband to nose band with the same conchos. The bit is also Visalia, with matching cheek conchos. A sterling engraved plate on the seat indicates a serial number, and Sartain's name. The leather is full floral carved. The saddle is in rideable condition.

Price: $22,000.00

Ballard Indian-Modified Carbine
Circa 1861

Ballard carbine, with Native American modifications, circa 1861. Marked "Ballard's Patent Nov 5 1861", on frame. Gun has an intersting octagonal barrel which changes to round. Wrapped with sinew-sewn rawhide on the forearm, which also has brass tacks on the underside. Brass tacks adorn the stock in a morning star pattern on one side, and a circle on the other. Patina on the wood around the tacks indicate they have been there for some time. This is a nice Indian gun.

Price: $3,750.00

Navajo Style Gun Rig
Circa 1950

Fabulous heavy leather double buscadero gun rig with incredibly Navajo stampwork including thunderbirds, arrows, snakes, whirling logs and lizards. This is 1 of 2 ever made, custom ordered by "The Pony Express" gun shop in Encino, California. It was purchased directly from the shop owner's family. It was put together by (and marked) Lee Ferris who was a Bohlin employee. The rig has silver stamped and repossed Navajo silver conchos set with turqoise as well as butterflies affixed to the leather. It is marked: "Pony Express Sport Shop Encino, Calif, 36 / 41 (hip size) - 38 - 5 1/2 CSA". The latter part indicates that the holsters fit two .38 Colt Single Actions with 5 1/2" barrels. It is missing one piece of turquoise, otherwise in excellent condition.

Price: $5,500.00

Shapleigh Gun Rig
Circa 1890

Shapleigh holster and moneybelt. Also known as Diamond Brand. Holster is for a 7 1/2 inch Colt SA, 44-45 caliber. The words Little Tejunga (spelled incorrectly) and Santa Fe are carved into the holster possibly indicating that it is from California. It is rare to find the belt and holster from the same maker, still together. Belt is marked faintly, holster's mark is more visible. This is a great piece of gunleather.

Price: $2,100.00
