Shoshone Sundance Hide Watercolor on hide depicting the Shonshone sundance cermony, circa 1920. Signed "George Norman", this may have been the work of an anthropologist observing the proceedings. Titled at the bottom, "Early in the Morning, Shoshoni Sundance", the painting shows the sacred pole and enclosure, with a full bald eagle mounted at the top of the pole, or in the "Eagle's Nest". The colors have faded somewhat and the green is almost non-existent, but careful scrutiny will reveal that the artist showed, correctly, the harvested pines surrounding the enclosure. The dancers are all inside, under (curiously) a red, white and blue stars and stripes banner. They have their hands in the air and are probably greeting the sunrise before the start of the dance. Spectators include seated women and standing men - the men are dressed in a variety of cowboy garb and either carry or are wrapped in blankets. Several saddled horses are in the periphery. This is a great piece - it's framed in an early Victorian or tramp art frame. Total size is 35 x 27. Price: $8,500.00 |

Cheyenne Painted Deer Hide From the collection of Carl Moon, noted southwest photographer. Pictured on page 310 of "In Search of the Wild Indian - Photographs and Life Works of Carl and Grace Moon" (Tom Driebe, author). In the book, Driebe writes that "Many of Moon's friends, such as the famous artist Charles M. Russell, collected artifacts and compared notes, and would sometimes trade items. Many of Moon's artifacts were collected by Russell and later given to Moon." Driebe also states that some of the Plains items came from the Crow scout White Man Runs Him, the Sioux chief Luther Standing Bear, or Chief Thunderbird. This is a deer hide, with four warriors in pictographic paint. Price: $15,000.00 |

Wolf Totem Wonderful old Haida totem (circa 1910) depicting a wolf holding a human, and what is possibly a beaver's head at the bottom. This was an outdoor piece, and probably had a twin - these were usually on either side of an entrance to a house. Remnants of old white, black and light blue paint remain. The cedar is weathered to silver-gray. 18" high. One ear of the wolf has been broken long ago. Fabulous piece. Price: $2,800.00 |

The bowl has a very old crack which has an equally old wire wrap. It's lined in iron, and also in some other metal, looking like pewter. Price: $1,875.00 |

Tall Cedar Totem Pole Tall totem pole from Chillwack, BC, circa 1907. Eagle is at the top, with a turtle, beaver and frog below. The eagle's outstretched wings are attached separately. The style is rather simplistic, with a pleasing look to it. Paint (probably from multiple paintings) remains on the piece. Over 37" tall, and 20" wide at wingspan. Price: $2,800.00 |

Hudson Bay Totem Pole Totem carved for the Hudson Bay stores, circa 1930. The Hudson Bay stores started literally as some of the earliest trading posts in Canada and the northwest; they are still in existence today. This carving consists of an eagle with outspread wings, atop a sea monster. The carving is detailed, but not really rooted in the Northwest Coast carving tradition. One of the wings broke and was repaired along the way, adding to its charm. Painted in vivid colors, showing the chips one would expect through the years, and with the words "display only" carved into the back of the base. 17" high, and 21" wide across wing span. Price: $2,000.00 |

Muslin Ledger Painting Unusually large, one-figure drawing on muslin by an unknown Native American artist. Depicting a warrior on horseback, this has the look of an Arapaho or Cheyenne. The horse's bridle looks to be of nickel silver and has a drop with a crescent hanging from it. The horse's tail is tied in a red cloth. The warrior's moccasins and leggings have a "mountain" or tipi style design, and he is wearing a full headdress. The horse has hands painted on shoulder and hip. This piece came from the Gary Coleman collection; after settlement of his legal battle with his parents, Mr. Coleman was awarded with many of the artworks purchased by them with his funds. Coleman sold the artwork to a music producer, where it has remained until now. Muslin is 34 x 40 in a larger lucite frame. Price: $25,000.00 |

Child's Tipi Rare Sioux child's Tipi circa 1885. Believed to have been an actual toy it due to the wear and the size. The tipi combines quillwork and beading: the sides have quilled cornstalks that appear to be topped with morning stars, there are beaded roundels, and beaded horizontal striping up the back. Although one side is quite faded it is possible to see some of the original bright red quilling on the other side. The tie tassles also had quill work with a few remaining. There are 4 beaded medallions with old yellow, copper brown and red beads. The back has 17 rows of cobalt blue beaded stripes each with 3 rows of clear pink beads in the middle. The tipi poles may be original based on their patina, but have been reinforced over the years with everything from wire to new sinew. This is a wonderful piece. Price: on request |

Plains Elk Robe Plains painted elk robe, circa 1880-1890. Red, blue, yellow and white paint are visible in an outline of the hide. It has a stylized representation of another hide inside the border, with a large red tail - possibly an indication of the "Long Tail Deer" which is one of the Elk Dreamer Society symbols. There are stylized bear paws on the neck of the hide. This was most likely a woman's wearing robe. The hair is still on the hide, but it is brittle and easily lost due to its age. 5' wide, and 4' 6" high, if displayed horizontally (at present, the only way to hang it is vertically - it is not mounted). In good condition with very little hardening or stiffness to the hide. There are several skinning holes evident. Price: on request |

Tsimshian Crest Unusual and visually interesting Tsimshian crest, or hat ornament, circa 1910. This is a stylized mountain goat, not often seen in Northwest Coast carving. The figure's face is near the bottom, with one large horn tapering smoothly to over 17" high. There are good remnants of vermillion and some black pigment. The bottom and lower back have holes, seemingly to affix the piece to a mask. A lovely, artistic piece. Price: $5,600.00 |
