California Spurs
Circa 1940

Nice pair of unmarked California spurs circa 1940. Narrow heelband and drop shank, with inlaid silver diagonal stripes on the heelband; vertical inlaid silver on the shanks. They may have had heel chains at one time but the chains are no longer there.

Price: $850.00

Canon City Cowgirl Spurs
Circa 1930

Double mounted, with nickel inlay on contoured heelbands and shanks. Dainty little rowels and the small size of the bands all point to cowgirl, as well as the smaller insteps on the spur straps. The straps are lined and stitched, and marked with the Visalia snake cartouche. They have sterling horseshoe buckles on the near side. The floral tooling is reminiscent of Sammy Cisco or one of her siblings, who worked for Visalia for a time. What a great package.

Price: $12,950.00

Horsehair Quirt
Circa 1910

Nicely hitched horsehair in colors of black, white, red, green, orange and blue, with large natural white tassels. In very good condition . 39" long. This was probably made in Laramie or Deerlodge prison. Original popper and wrist strap.

Price: $1,000.00

Prison Horsehair Bridle
Circa 1930

An understated beauty, and so delicate in it's hitching, makes this bridle a real departure from the heavy examples normally seen. This one has double rolls of hitching on the browband and cheeks, however there is no noseband.
Whoever used this bridle apparently liked the looks of their horse's head. Heart-shaped nickel conchos on the browband, with long fringed tassels indicate this may have been a cowgirl's bridle. The graceful leather split reins also reinforce this possibility. Steel bit with nice engraving and high port with roller mouth, is original to the piece. Circa 1930.
29" from poll to lip bar.

Price: $4,500.00

Crockett Silver Mounted Spurs
Circa 1935

Large spurs with big rowels, marked Crockett. Silver overlay, engraved beautifully, adorns the outside heelbands. A piece of silver is also overlaid onto each rowel, like a fixed rowel disk. These were clearly used but still retain 80% of their engraving. In very good condition. In our opinion, the overlay and engraving was done in the Crockett shop. Heelbands are 1 1/4" wide, rowels are 2 1/4".

Price: $3,500.00

Horsehair Bridle with Showy Bit
Circa 1910

Wonderful prison-made horsehair and leather bridle, with prison-made conchos and bit. Rarely do you find the original fancy bit on the bridle - and many times the bridles were made with very plain iron bits to begin with. The brow, middle of cheeks, and various sections of the reins are horsehair in bright colors on a white background, with large white tassels. The braided leather is California style, with knots on the reins and a romel. The brow conchos feature engravd horse's heads. The big bit is also California style, and has a half-breed mouth. This is in VERY nice condition and is a real looker. All of the silver is nickel silver, consistent with what was used in the prisons at this time. Probably from Walla Walla or one of the other northwestern/Idaho prisons.

Price: $6,250.00

Unmarked Silver Spurs
Circa 1940

Unmarked, possibly Crockett spurs with silver engraved overlay on the outside heelbands and shanks. Beautifully engraved silver and engraved silver buttons. The rowels appear to be hand made and may have been replaced at some point, although it was done without affecting the overlay on the shank.

Price: $1,825.00

Black Horsehair Bridle
Circa 1920

Stunning, black horsehair bridle, possibly made at Deerlodge Prison, circa 1920. This one is in UNUSED condition, and has b een stored carefully - the colors are as bright as the day it was made, we'd wager. The many colors include red, denim blue, orange, black, pink and yellow, green, and lavender. There's a drop from the poll to the browband, and then down to the noseband, with tassels, braid, and needle knots. The throat-latch has lovely large tassels in green, with a wide needle-knotted slip knot. The bridle's glass rosettes at the brow have dog heads while the noseband rosettes sport a horseshoe and saddle. Small tassels hang from the set of brow rosettes. Even the split reins have the original silk finishing thread. This is an outstanding piece - one of the best offered.

Price: $11,250.00

Horsehair Bridle
Circa 1910

Natural white horsehair bridle, with many colors including red, denim blue, gray, orange, black, pink and yellow, and lavender. Wonderful construction of 3 bands at poll, which slide for size adjustment. There's a drop from the poll to the browband, and then down to the noseband, with tassels, braid, and needle knots. The throat-latch has lovely large tassels in blue, with a wide needle knotted slip knot. The same tassels are on the split reins (but brown this time), which also have a slip knot, and which have a beautiful transition from light background to dark background. The bridle rosettes (at each brow and nose) are an interesting layering of leather cut in alternating circles and stars, and with differing, but complementary colors. Small tassels hang from each of the rosettes. A few worn spots, but otherwise in excellent condition, and a very nice example. This comes from the display collection of the MacRae's Indian Bookstore (Enumclaw, WA), recently sold. It may have been constructed by the same prisoner as the bridle above - but about a decade earlier.

Price: $8,950.00

Sioux Bridle
Circa 1885-1890

Fabulous beaded bridle cover, with quilled brow and noseband. This one is mounted on a leather bridle, as it would have been when used. Extensive beadwork over the poll, brow, cheeks, and nose, with an additional crossed face drop. The throatlatch is even beaded. Rosettes are at each side of the brow, and old American flag silk ribbons remain intact. The reins are split hide with light beadwork - these may date later than the bridle. Comes with horse's head display.

Price: $22,500.00

Echavarria California Spurs

Circa 1910

Important and rare MARKED spurs by J.F. Echavarria (Bit and Spur Makers in the Vaquero Tradition, p. 200). Echavarria died in 1917, so these definitely pre-date 1920. Originally from Chile, he worked in San Jose from 1884 until his death. This pair is a dainty California drop shank, with double heel chains. Three panels of engraved silver are inlaid on the heelband; there are also inlaid strips on the shank, and inlay on the top edge of the heelband and shank. Sterling buttons adorn the chap guard, and large buttons cover the rowel pins. The off-side is chased iron. The spurs have sterling strap buttons. Leather spur straps are circa 1930 - 1940, with Schatzlein style sterling conchos. Nice.
