Gold & Silver Horsehead Spurs

Circa 1920

Unsigned spurs circa 1920. Fabulous horse's head in gold, inside a gold, diamond-shaped outline. Silver overlay on both sides, as well as on rowel pin (both sides) and buttons. The engraving is simple and straightforward. These are one-piece, handforged spurs and have a contoured, scalloped heel band reminiscent of the McChesney peanut pattern, but larger. Walla Walla Spurs

Circa: 1940

Large hand forged spurs with nickel mountings which probably came from the Walla Walla Prison in Washington. These seem to have one-piece construction, with the chap guard peeled from the shank, and shaped like a spade from a deck of cards. Really nice file work, and contouring occurs in every area. The nickel overlays have wriggled engraving, as do the brass rowel pin covers. Rowels are cut like flowers, and also show wriggled outlining, Evidence of some wear. Marked DB & DU in tiny die struck letters under each shank. Circa 1940.

Prison Horsehair Bridle

Circa: 1930

An understated beauty, and so delicate in it's hitching, makes this bridle a real departure from the heavy examples normally seen. This one has double rolls of hitching on the browband and cheeks, however there is no noseband.
Whoever used this bridle apparently liked the looks of their horse's head. Heart-shaped nickel conchos on the browband, with long fringed tassels indicate this may have been a cowgirl's bridle. The graceful leather split reins also reinforce this possibility. Steel bit with nice engraving and high port with roller mouth, is original to the piece. Circa 1930.
29" from poll to lip bar.

Price: $4,500.00

Horsehair Bridle with Showy Bit

Circa: 1910

Wonderful prison-made horsehair and leather bridle, with prison-made conchos and bit. Rarely do you find the original fancy bit on the bridle - and many times the bridles were made with very plain iron bits to begin with. The brow, middle of cheeks, and various sections of the reins are horsehair in bright colors on a white background, with large white tassels. The braided leather is California style, with knots on the reins and a romel. The brow conchos feature engravd horse's heads. The big bit is also California style, and has a half-breed mouth. This is in VERY nice condition and is a real looker. All of the silver is nickel silver, consistent with what was used in the prisons at this time. Probably from Walla Walla or one of the other northwestern/Idaho prisons.

Price: $6,250.00

Black Horsehair Bridle

Circa: 1920

Stunning, black horsehair bridle, possibly made at Deerlodge Prison, circa 1920. This one is in UNUSED condition, and has b een stored carefully - the colors are as bright as the day it was made, we'd wager. The many colors include red, denim blue, orange, black, pink and yellow, green, and lavender. There's a drop from the poll to the browband, and then down to the noseband, with tassels, braid, and needle knots. The throat-latch has lovely large tassels in green, with a wide needle-knotted slip knot. The bridle's glass rosettes at the brow have dog heads while the noseband rosettes sport a horseshoe and saddle. Small tassels hang from the set of brow rosettes. Even the split reins have the original silk finishing thread. This is an outstanding piece - one of the best offered.

Horsehair Bridle

Circa: 1910

Natural white horsehair bridle, with many colors including red, denim blue, gray, orange, black, pink and yellow, and lavender. Wonderful construction of 3 bands at poll, which slide for size adjustment. There's a drop from the poll to the browband, and then down to the noseband, with tassels, braid, and needle knots. The throat-latch has lovely large tassels in blue, with a wide needle knotted slip knot. The same tassels are on the split reins (but brown this time), which also have a slip knot, and which have a beautiful transition from light background to dark background. The bridle rosettes (at each brow and nose) are an interesting layering of leather cut in alternating circles and stars, and with differing, but complementary colors. Small tassels hang from each of the rosettes. A few worn spots, but otherwise in excellent condition, and a very nice example. This comes from the display collection of the MacRae's Indian Bookstore (Enumclaw, WA), recently sold. It may have been constructed by the same prisoner as the bridle above - but about a decade earlier.
