Kiowa Leggings

Circa 1870

Kiowa leggings, circa 1870's. Soft brain tanned leather, with green and yellow ochre. Geometric pattern of red white heart's, blue's, greasy yellow's and greens, and white beadwork down the sides and along the cuffs, front and back. Gourd stitched drop with horsehair tassle. Abundant fringe flowing off the side and cuffs as well. 31" long by approx. 11" wide when hanging.

Circa 1890

 

Kiowa gunbelt, holster and gun circa 1890. Probably from Wild West Show. Gun shows a lot of use. Typical Kiowa beadwork on holster. Brass and nickel tacks on belt. 49.5" belt (end to end) 1" wide. 5.5" width of holster, and 11" long - not including tassles. Gun is 10" long by 4.5".

Sioux Child's Ceremonial Moccasins

 

Circa 1880

Fantastic moccasins with fully beaded bottoms, and mountain and morning star design on the uppers, under split tongues. On a Greasy Green background. Split tongues with red and white barred design and cone drops. These were worn a bit, and have very minimal restoration. 7" by 2.75".

Early Arapaho Moccasins

Circa 1870

These shoes have the highly desirable painted parfleche soles - recycled from larger parfleche containers that have worn out their original purpose. They come from a Scottish estate where the orginal collector worked for the Hudson's Bay Company. A wonderful pair in 90% condition, presumably worn by an Arapaho warrior in pre-reservation times. Hide is buffalo. 10.5" by 3.75"

Arapaho Buffalo Effigy Moccasins

Circa 1880

These are intricately beaded moccasins in typical Arapaho designs, with the addition of a stylized buffalo head on each tongue. Traces of yellow ochre are apparent, especially under the tongue. Hard soles, sewn with sinew. 11.25" by 3.75".

Cheyenne Child's Saddle Bags

Circa 1880

Wonderful bags on a smaller scale, with typical Southern Cheyenne beadwork and coloration. Yellow ochre is evident, as well as red stroud in each bottom panel, along opening, and edging outside of bags. The bags show good use.

"Whoopee!" Arm Bands

 

Circa: 1900

Marked with Samuel Goldwyn Ltd., and Whoopee, in ink inside the armbands, these were most likely authentic Sioux armbands That wound up in a costume department of a movie studio. The film Whoopee was a slapstick comedy set out west starring Eddie Cantor. The armbands are of the type that would have been worn to keep the long sleeves of a western shirt from riding down the wrists of shorter-armed men. Quilled and beaded on leather, with round rosettes in the center, and remnants of bird down. Circa 1900. 6" by 1.5".

Possibly Northern Cheyenne, circa 1890. In the shape of a child's tipi bag, or possible bag. Red white hearts, and green beads alternate in bands, with trader blue beads around the flap. 4 1/2" by 5".

Sioux Tipi Bag

Circa: 1880

Fantastic early tipi bag on buffalo hide, circa 1880. With detailed quill work on the front, feathered cones, and yarn, this bag has the most early detail of any we've seen. The top flap and edges are beaded. The bag has old collection tags on it, stating that it is a "Kiowa hunting bag" which we feel is incorrect - many items were casually identified when collected at an earlier time. The bag is ex-Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, and ex-Fred Harvey Collection (collection #33-1211 is inscribed under the flap). 22" L x 14" H x approx. 3" D.

Plateau Child's Dress

Circa: 1890


Lovely Plateau child's dress, circa 1890. On soft braintanned leather, with typical deertail beaded design at the neck and arms. Fringed drops, and a few shells decorate the body. Two different pink beads, three blue tones, yellow, green, cranberry, pumpkin, lavender beads, and other colors as well, are evident. Evidence of wear is seen on the inside of the neck. Fringe across one side shows verdigris, indicating that something brass, perhaps bells, were attached at one time (it was common for the bells to be retained since they were expensive and could be re-used on another garment). The dress is 33" wide and 35" long, with its own museum wall mount.

Nez Perce Beaded Cuffs

Circa: 1885

Beaded wrist cuffs. Probably Nez Perce, these have the favored blue background, chevron striping around each edge, and early floral motif. Beaded on leather, with silk lining. These were constructed with a combination of tiny cut beads and seed beads in early colors, and they have long laces dropping from the seam. 6 1/4" long, and 4" at widest point.

Kiowa Knife and Sheath

Circa: 1885

Rare Kiowa knife sheath and what appears to be the original knife, circa 1885. Fully beaded front has greasy blue beaded background, with design elements in greasy yellow, red, trader blue, pink, cobalt, white and red white-heart. The edge is beaded in red white-heart. The back of the case is heavy rawhide, possibly buffalo. The case is contoured around the knife. The knife is a much-sharpened J. Russell & Co. Green River Works knife. The handle is worn smooth from use. A wonderful combination for the southern plains collector and knife collector alike. Sheath is 9.25 x 3.25.

Arapaho Awl and Flint Case

Circa: 1885


Rare matching set consisting of awl case and flint case, collected in the 1880's by Mr. W. Lydecker. The pieces have a white beaded background with cobalt, red white-heart, and medium blue beads and beaded on both sides. Both pieces have brass beads on the belt ties; the awl case also has brass beads on a fringed drop. Interesting and typically Arapaho seams are beaded with a double row of white beads on both pieces. They are in excellent shape and are probably made of buffalo. A copy of Lydecker's permission to enter the Cheyenne/Arapaho territory and a copy photograph of the original collection including the two cases, is included. Lydecker was a Union Pacific employee. Flint case is 1 1/2" wide x 3 3/4" long. Awl case is 6" long (excluding drops).

Arapaho Ghost Dance Dress

Circa: 1890

Remarkable child's dress used for ceremonial Ghost Dances. This came out of the Blackpipe State Bank in North Dakota. Painted with yellow ochre. There are several painted symbols on this piece, including an Eagle, and a morningstar. Many star patterns are also evident throughout. A highly collectible dress. 23" high by 23" wide (sleeve to sleeve).

Sioux Knife Sheath with Quillwork

Circa: 1885

Sioux knife sheath with full beadwork on one side, and quillwork on the other. The beadwork, in two panels, has a top panel of cornflower blue ground, with cobalt, greasy green, and red white-hearts forming a stepped diamond. The top is edged in greasy yellow and red white-hearts. A band of tin cone drops separates the two panels. The bottom panel is trader blue ground with small geometric elements in green, cobalt, red white-heart, and greasy yellow. On the reverse, pale pink and green quillwork outline the sheath, with darker lavender, and a green morning star. Some blue quillwork is visible at the top. Sheath has a rawhide lining, probably buffalo. Knife is probably not original. 9.5 x 3 - a substantial sheath.

Cheyenne Leggings and Mocassins

Circa: 1890

Probably for a girl. The legging portion are of lovely supple brain-tanned leather that were painted with yellow ochre. The beading is a typical Cheyenne barred design in pink, three blues, green, dark red and white, in both cut and round beads. The moccasins have a roundel design like a keyhole, with feathers. The bead colors are similar to those in the leggings, with the addition of greasy yellow and pumpkin. An old paper tag with the number 662 is affixed to one legging. A charming pair in wonderful condition. 12" by 8.5".

Sioux Bridle

Circa: 1885-1890

Fabulous beaded bridle cover, with quilled brow and noseband. This one is mounted on a leather bridle, as it would have been when used. Extensive beadwork over the poll, brow, cheeks, and nose, with an additional crossed face drop. The throatlatch is even beaded. Rosettes are at each side of the brow, and old American flag silk ribbons remain intact. The reins are split hide with light beadwork - these may date later than the bridle. Comes with horse's head display.

Sioux Beaded Bridle

Circa: 1890

Sioux beaded bridle from the Paul Dyke collection. Dyke was an artist and collector; a majority of his pieces have been purchased by the Buffalo Bill Plains Indian Museum. The bridle has a blue background, with cobalt, yellow, white and red white-heart beaded tipi designs. There are also some pumpkin beads, some nickel and brass beads, and green making up other design elements. Beaded reins match the bridle. Quill work along the brow band, with tin cones and horsehair, and silk ribbons, add to the colorful piece. The color in this picture is a little off...the beads are a truer blue...not turquoise.

Small Ute Bag

Circa: 1890-1900

Small bags from the Southern Plains or Basin area, possibly Ute. Constructed like saddle bags, but in miniature - sometimes these are identified as dog bags, sometimes as personal bags, sometimes as child's saddle bags. These are one piece with a seam up the middle, which is left un-stitched for the center opening. Mountain (stepped) beadwork is at each end, and morning stars are above each mountain. Circa 1890-1900. 28" long including fringe.

Plateau Saddle Bags

Circa: 1910

These are very nicely made of soft thick hides, red trade cloth and beautiful beadwork. The two large geometric beadwork panels are 9 1/2" by 8 1/2" and are beaded with blue, red, pink, green, yellow, dark green, cobalt and white beads. The outside edges of each panel are outlined in serrated green dyed leather, with beaded details and then, a strip of dark blue wool. The fringe on each end is 31" long. The canvas backing shows very light wear; these were probably used in a parade and sold right to a spectator. These bags are extremely visual and would be a great focal point in a room.

Miniature Boots with Beaded Wings

Circa: 1890

Rare miniature boots that are probably either Jicarilla Apache or Ute. They have very intricate beadwork edging on the side wings of white, yellow, red and teal. The tops and outside edges are beaded with a black and white morning star design. There is evidence of red ochre on the wings. Bottoms are rawhide. 7 1/2" tall. Miniatures are exremely collectible.

Chippewa Child's Moccasins

Circa: 1890

This pair is composed of very small cut beads in a floral pattern, and is decorated with a velvet trim to adorn the soft hide. There is also embroidery work. The silk is a rich, un-faded purple, but is missing in places. Minor bead loss - in nice condition, 6.5" long.
